……There’s a song on my mind that demonstrates how creativity is the blueprint to success, to leading with conviction in our own lives and the work we do. With all the changes and shifts we’re experiencing today, why not take a fun detour and flash back to an upbeat song from 1990? “Groove Is in the Heart” by Deee-Lite was a cultural phenomenon that taught us how to enjoy the dance of life. This pop culture nugget of wisdom is just as relevant today as it was 25 years ago.
……The music video is filled with bright colors, a clash of fashion styles and wacky dances. The lyrics are nonsensical. Somehow, this song is able to pull off the ample use of a slide whistle and a cowbell. Even the name “Deee-Lite” is outrageous. A diverse group of young people dance around a room swirling with colors, glitter and platform shoes. The DJ spins while an older Black man jams on the saxophone.
……When we catch the calling in our hearts, we find ourselves in places of lightness and joy. It’s available to all of us, anytime. This artistic and joyful song proves the mantra repeated in the chorus and in the title: The groove is in the heart.
……Life and leadership don’t have to be logical. If we’re having a good time, does it have to make sense? We don’t have to be afraid of change or the unknown. Our hearts can lead the way. All we need to do is listen.
……Sometimes, our heart may suggest we take time off to rest. As winter comes to a close, your heart and body may desire a little time off. If your heart encourages you to treat yourself, believe in it. If the long winter has you feeling ready to paint the town red, don’t let anything get in your way. Trust yourself. Only you know what you need.
……For March, groove to the beat of your own drum with the wellness practice of a dance break.
……Break out your dancing shoes, turn on your favorite playlist and groove! When is the last time you let loose in a “Grey’s Anatomy”-style dance break through your living room? Have you ever? Whether you’re an old pro or a wallflower, consider finding time to catch the beat.
Ask others to dance: Joy is contagious. If you live with others, invite them to join you on the floor. You’ll likely look back and cherish the memories of dancing through your home with your loved ones.
Make new friends: If the people in your life would roll their eyes at the mere suggestion, make more friends! There may be “Ecstatic Dance” parties in your local community. These spaces are designed to bring strangers together in joy through dance.
Start small: If the idea of an all-out dance break feels intimidating, take one small step. Play some music while completing a mundane task: cleaning, getting your oil changed and checking off items on your to-do list. Set it to music and dance through it!
……Dancing is a wonderful way to nourish your body with movement. This practice allows you to physically release any trauma or worry you might be carrying. Let your heart lead each step. Don’t feel obligated to complete this practice immediately. Sit with it. Your heart will communicate when the moment is right to bust a move.
