Equity is the quality of being fair and impartial. It is a core guiding principle of Strong Women Action Network. It is not to be confused with equality. We believe equality is not enough.

This difference is particularly important in education, as Shane Safir describes in her article for the George Lucas Educational Foundation: equality means giving everyone the same resources, equity means giving each student access to the resources they need to learn and thrive.

Then there are the definitions when it comes to social justice. Amy Sum describes the difference between equity and equality. They are two strategies we can use in an effort to produce fairness. Equity is giving everyone what they need to be successful. Equality is treating everyone the same. Equality aims to promote fairness, but it can only work if everyone starts from the same place and needs the same help.

Strong Women Action Network aims to achieve equity. Our target is not equality and the unfairness of the richest one percent. Our focus is to provide women with the resources they need to succeed, period. It does not matter where they are in their lives, what do they want to do, or the access they had to skills, experience, and support before being part of SWAN. Our guiding principle is to create programs, networks, and support systems that are focused on equity. We already know women are not treated the same as men. We already know that class, ethnicity and economic background are barriers for women. We are here to focus on equity so we can make it possible for women to reach positions of power that are proportionally representing the demographics of our nation.

You can make a difference by joining us – either by participating in one of our programs or supporting our work in 2018. Regional retreats connect women across states, provide a safe and nurturing environment to create personal and professional strategic plans, and identify what kind of support you need to continue to move into positions of power so you can have greater impact and address gender and racial equity in your community, work and/or your profession. Group Coaching Sessions are for women who are ready to move forward with their personal and professional goals. During this one year program you will:

  • Share opportunities and challenges at work and home.
  • Connect with women from diverse fields and backgrounds
  • Create a circle of support
  • Expand participants’ knowledge and share tools. Monthly topics will vary depending on the interests and needs of the participants of the session.
  • Explore long-term self-care strategies
  • Discuss issues specific to women in our society
  • Provide support to participants’ plans so they can increase their impact and power in their communities and work environments

You can help women achieve equity in their work and in their communities. Contact us for more information on how you can make a difference!
